Live Action Role Playing is now in its fifth year. Considered the embarrassing lovechild of Drama and Gaming, LARP is somewhat maligned by the larger student body. Participants take on the role of a fantasy character, and act out stories and adventures in real time. Two years ago, the well-loved Mr. Pennywise served as LARP's sponsor, where he would pretend to be a king who had gone mad in his old age, handing out ridiculous proclamations and ranting at his put-upon knights.

After some begging, Mr. Elmasry was convinced to step up last year. Upon the "death" of King Pennywise, his young son and only heir assumed throne! Mr. Elmasry has grown more comfortable as the club's sponsor, and upgraded himself to a more sparkly crown this year.

LARP is sponsored by Mr. Elmasry. It meets every Saturday from 4–6 PM.

PLAYING
LARP club is intended to be accessible for students and is based loosely upon a heavily homebrewed d20 3.5. Emphasis is placed upon roleplaying and storytelling over number crunching, so conflict and other checks are typically settled with a few throws of Rock, Paper, Scissors. When combat comes up, if it's played out, it's fought with fake padded or foam weapons (though many of them look very realistic) and spell packets in place of actual magic. Highly dedicated club members, past and present, have left the club with an impressive treasury of costume pieces, props, accessories and weapons, and students are encouraged to go all out on their characters' iconic looks.

Each club member may have one Player Character in the club's primary setting of the Kingdom of Logan. Player Characters have a name, race, class (based on 3.5 D&D), and at least some backstory. From time to time, when not otherwise participating in a scene, students may be asked to fill NPC roles like foot soldier, monster or shopkeeper (if you'd like, you can solely play NPCs). Students may at any time drop their Player Character and roll a new one, although there is an expectation among club members that you will play this switch out in character; for instance, by killing off your old character.

When roleplaying, players will occasionally receive or find cards with plot hooks on them. Green cards are optional - you can opt to carry out the hook listed. A Green Card might say something like, "You see the bloody footprints of a large animal leading off the trail." Orange cards, on the other hand, are unavoidable plot hooks - "You are enchanted by the sound of singing coming from a nearby stream and are compelled to investigate," for instance. These cards are brought to a Moderator (see below) to complete the Module.

(OOC NOTE: All of this is primarily for in character reference of how sessions go. I will handle all items that need "moderation" or RNG rolling. From time to time, if people are threading in the club IC/OOC, I will drop a green or orange card on them to react to. This'll be kind of similar to spooks and ghost encounters from last year's end game. If you would like to suggest a module, please drop box it here or email me.)

THE SETTING
For the vast majority of the year, LARP club follows one contiguous storyline set in the Kingdom of Logan. Logan is a high fantasy setting - in the vein of Faerun - which plays host to a wide variety of fantastic creatures. LARP club, hoping to keep it interesting and fun for everyone, has a policy of generally letting people play what they want, provided it's not hurting or ruining anyone else's fun.

The Kingdom of Logan is ruled by King Elmasry, only son of the previous mad King Pennywise. King Elmasry is a fair and just ruler, and not nearly as goofy as his predecessor, but still liable to hand out the occasional odd proclamation from time to time.

In order to keep the action flowing, club members are asked to split themselves into two primary factions. Players can switch factions at any time, but standard roleplaying etiquette applies - swap back and forth too many times and people might get annoyed and stop interacting with you. Other, smaller factions have sprung up as needed or simply because players wanted them, but the two overarching factions are:
The Court of Logan is the more Good and Lawful of the two options and is comprised of those in service to King Elmasry. The Court of Logan is generally where new club members who aren't sure what they want to do are placed. Within the club, it's jokingly referred to as the goody two-shoes faction.
The Onyx Syndicate is, as the name implies, the faction for all the edgelords in the audience. The Onyx Syndicate is something of a smuggling/piracy/crime ring that is, from time to time, in direct opposition to King Elmasry and his court. Though not necessarily "evil" or "bad," the Onyx Syndicate is generally full of scoundrels. Its members usually seek more chaotic and selfish resolutions to plots.

From time to time, LARPers may take a break from their A Storyline to try out different systems and plots as one shots: murder mysteries, sci fi or Vampire, the Masquerade, for instance.

TERMS

  • MODERATOR is an In Character title, and basically means that the student may be occasionally tasked with "running a module" - overseeing a battle, prompting a scene, etc. Predominantly seniors and juniors are moderators.
  • NPC is any non-plot-centric character, such as a shopkeep, a city guard, a corpse. Club members may from time to time be asked to NPC for other people when they aren't otherwise tied up in a scene. Usually freshmen are made to do it, but you can career NPC if you want.
  • ORANGE CARD is an orange index card with a plot hook written on it. The understanding with orange cards is that you are required to pursue the plot hook if you receive one.
  • GREEN CARD
is a green index card with a plot hook written on it. Your character is not required to pursue hooks written on green cards.
  • MODULE is, basically, a term for a scene. The LARP equivalent of a thread. We're incepted as fuck at this point, folks.

  • CHARACTER SHEET

Hey so if you want to go all out and make a more detailed character write up with history and personality and relationships, please do, by all means. I just wanted to keep the basics simple so it's not too intimidating to complete. Please post the completed character form below under this heading.
    STUDENT NAME:
MODERATOR?: Y/N - see above for details
NPC?: Y/N, you can elaborate here. For example, a character ONLY plays NPCs (you can skip all the character stuff below) or doesn’t LIKE playing NPCs but does anyway
PLAY STYLE?: Please give me a brief idea of how your character … plays their character. How serious are they? Are they shy? Etc. Just a sentence or two is fine.

CHARACTER NAME: Your character’s character’s name. This goes deep, everyone.
RACE/CLASS: Any race or base class (no prestige classes plz) from D&D 3.5e core + splat books is acceptable.
    HOOK: Gimme a 1 – 2 sentence rundown of your character’s character.
FACTION(S): Court of Logan / Onyx Syndicate and then any subsequent groups they may be a part of.
    ANYTHING ELSE?:

    EXAMPLE: Yancey Montgomery

    (Link)

    STUDENT NAME: Yancey Montgomery
    MODERATOR?: Y
    NPC?: Y, as needed
PLAY STYLE?: This Dustin Hoffman ass motherfucker tends to go all in as soon as club meeting time starts, breaking character only to deal with serious out of character issues. He even moderates in character.

    CHARACTER NAME: Wojtek
    RACE/CLASS: Half-Elf Sorcerer
HOOK: Traveling scholar of draconic lore, recently returned from an adventure abroad he won't speak of, takes up mercenary work to make ends meet.
FACTION(S): Free agent, but presently Court of Logan
    ANYTHING ELSE?:

    EXAMPLE: Nisha Lewis

    (Link)

    STUDENT NAME: Nisha Lewis
    MODERATOR?: N, never.
NPC?: Y, and frequently, because she's a noob.
PLAY STYLE?: Nisha hurtles headlong into being in character, but her character is also 80% a joke, so it can be grating. She breaks character frequently, and has a hard time taking serious scenes seriously.

CHARACTER NAME: Amrita "Red-Eye Rita" Pryce
    RACE/CLASS: Halfling Rogue
HOOK: Red-Eye Rita is the scourge of no more than one sea, no less than seven taverns.
    FACTION(S): The Onyx Syndicate
ANYTHING ELSE?: NO RELATION to the Artificer, Daedalus. FFS dude was a gnome.

    Reece Downing

    (Link)

    STUDENT NAME: Reece Downing
    MODERATOR?: Y
    NPC?: If needed ~
PLAY STYLE?: For someone who's shy and reserved on a normal day, Reece is very at his ease during LARP and commits to staying in-character no matter how ridiculous the character is. For the previous three years, he played a Scottish dwarf. This fairy might be... Russian? He's got a lot of accents but they're all questionable. Having fun is more important to him than following the rules to the letter.

    CHARACTER NAME: Jaya Wildjewel
    RACE/CLASS: Fairy Druid
HOOK: A thinly veiled stock Magical Girl who's a friend to all living things, including trees, which are her friends.
    FACTION(S): Court of Logan.
ANYTHING ELSE?: Jaya is Riley's character's twin sister.

    Grace Sowerberry

    (Link)

    STUDENT NAME: Grace Sowerberry
    MODERATOR?: Nope!
    NPC?: Sure!
PLAY STYLE?: Grace is shy and she has difficulty interacting in groups. She's joined LARP as part of her ongoing effort to conquer her social anxieties but she will struggle for a while! Knowing her limitations, her character has been designed to accommodate a certain amount of quietness on her part (at least for the time being). While she'll try to stay in character, she may lose her cool and forget her persona when something particularly shocking or exciting or whimsical or romantic happens. Please help her stay on point. She would appreciate it.

    CHARACTER NAME: Cyrille Moulin
    RACE/CLASS: Human Fighter (Swordsman)
HOOK: A swordswoman from another kingdom, Cyrille's father trained soldiers for a lesser noble and she grew up benefitting from the same lessons. As a young woman, wanting to put her talents to use, she masqueraded as a boy and spent several years in the service of an archduke. She had to flee her home after entering into a duel with the archduke's son, who intended to marry her lady love. She wounded the young man and won the duel, giving the pair the chance to escape together, but her love would not come with her. How tragic! She intended to put her blade away and spent time in an opera company but eventually came into the service of King Elmasry instead. She's developed a certain level of stoicism to protect her heart and she is a knowledgeable, no-nonsense fighter with an appreciation for the arts.
    FACTION(S): Court of Logan
ANYTHING ELSE?: This is the look Grace will be going for when she comes to LARP. How dashing! Also, she knows nothing about swordsmanship, so anyone in Fencing Club that would like to take her under or make fun of her or whatever could be fun? Her character was inspired by real-life lady badass Julie d’Aubigny (aka La Maupin), a swashbuckling opera singer, who she read about over the summer! She promises not to burn down any convents.

    Riley Stamper

    (Link)

    STUDENT NAME: Riley Mae Stamper
    MODERATOR?: lollll no
NPC?: YES because she mostly just likes that other people are paying attention to her.
PLAY STYLE?: Riley is not a very serious person, and when she starts out she is going to be very easily confused and break character constantly. But by the end of the year there is more than a 100% chance she will be deep into the motivations of Raya Spidertwirls and have a LOT of thoughts on her plot arc.

CHARACTER NAME: Raya Spidertwirls. It's not her real last name. She's got some folks looking for her.
    RACE/CLASS: Fairy Bard
HOOK: A down on her luck lowlife fairy girl trying to escape debtors, reconnect with family, their bank accounts.
    FACTION(S): Onyx Syndicate
ANYTHING ELSE?: Raya is Reece's character's (definitely identical) twin sister.

    Ursula de Luca

    (Link)

    STUDENT NAME: Ursula de Luca
    MODERATOR?: Yes.
NPC?: She'll do it in a pinch, but her acting range is... limited.
PLAY STYLE?: At the start of last year, Ursula was basically just playing Ursula. She's still not a terribly talented roleplayer and Princess Andress behaves very much as a heightened version of Ursula, but she does take it seriously.

CHARACTER NAME: Princess Andress of the Great Salt Lake
    RACE/CLASS: Aventi/Atlantean Rogue (former Sorcerer)
HOOK: Once a powerful sea witch, a jealous mermaid stole the necklace that was the source of her powers, shattered it into numerous pieces, disguised them as simple baubles and scattered them across the land. Forced to rely on her wits alone, Princess Andress is now on a journey to reunite the necklace fragments and save her homeland from the usurper mermaid.
FACTION(S): Free agent, known to be loyal first to her self-interests, which makes her a far more common ally of The Onyx Syndicate.
ANYTHING ELSE?: Princess Andress is a charisma tank and takes advantage of the rogue's vast skillset, moreso than its iconic sneak attack feature. She wields a hand crossbow and each recovered necklace frament functions as a magic item, capable of channelling a designated minor spell once per session. Last year, she managed to recover one fragment. (There were lengthy discussions last year on how to optimally stat her to dual wield hand crossbows, but despite looking badass it was highly impractical in play.)

    Milo Greer

    (Link)

    STUDENT NAME: Milo Greer
MODERATOR?: Probably not? But he won't say No if Yancey asked!
NPC?: He can do it if you need him for something, sure!
PLAY STYLE?: Milo is really into this. He's very enthusiastic, not shy at all, and goes all out.

    CHARACTER NAME: Traven Maernddare
    RACE/CLASS: Wood Elf/Druid
HOOK: A Robin Hood-esque wannabe, looking to defend the little guy from those who would otherwise cast them aside like his family did to him. Mostly just finds the most advantageous situations for himself and makes it seem like he's a hero. Ta-da! Hoping to regain what was lost to him along the way, but mostly just enjoying stirring the pot for others.
FACTION(S): Mostly a Free Agent, though more closely relates/identifies with Onyx Syndicate
ANYTHING ELSE?: His father was a high elf and his mother a wood elf. His father and the more "superior" kin shunned him and his mother, which led him to a life in the wild woods. A little bitter about city or kingdom dwellers, but not evil. More a person of opportunity type. He lost his ability to speak and hear due to a particularly nasty run in with a sorceress who didn't appreciate his cheeky attitude. He's "trying" to make up for that.

    Bianca Dubois

    (Link)

    STUDENT NAME: Bianca Dubois
    MODERATOR?: No
NPC?: She'll play an NPC if asked.
PLAY STYLE?: Bianca is still a little shy about LARP but she's trying her best to be serious and stay in character.

    CHARACTER NAME: Luna "Dagger" Windrunner
    RACE/CLASS: Half-elf / Ex-Cleric
HOOK: She's on the run after being framed by a group of elves for the murder of her sister. Her diety took away her magic and now she's trying to atone to get it back so she can maybe go home, or possibly find a new diety and start over. She wields daggers and goes by a fake name to survive.
FACTION(S): Does whatever benefits her best.
ANYTHING ELSE?: Her father is an Moon elf king who married her human mother for diplomatic reasons. After her mother died of an apparent animal attack, her father eventually remarried to another elf and they had a child of their own. Luna wasn't very popular among the elves after that. Not when they could get a REAL elf to rule one day.

    Fern Mufferaw

    (Link)

    STUDENT NAME: Fern Mufferaw
    MODERATOR?: N
    NPC?: Mostly N
PLAY STYLE?: Is Fern totally IC, or mostly OOC and just naturally an asshole? Hard to tell. Either way, she's mostly here to cause chaos.

    CHARACTER NAME: Cacti Plaid
    RACE/CLASS: Half Orc Barbarian
HOOK: Long lost daughter of Healer Mufferaw (Chris Park's character from last year), raised by Digdug (Robin Youngblood's character from last year). Cacti has inherited control of the Henchmen Human Resources Department.
    FACTION(S): Onyx Syndicate, Hench HR.
ANYTHING ELSE?: Onyx Syndicate have very competitive dental plan.

    Chloe Shepherd

    (Link)

    STUDENT NAME: Chloe Shepherd
    MODERATOR?: Y
    NPC?: Y
PLAY STYLE?: Chloe's here to have fun, and isn't opposed to a little ooc joking around, but tends to try to take it seriously and stay ic so they can get some serious rp progress done. She's way less shy than last year, but not 100% over it.

    CHARACTER NAME: Griza Masri
    RACE/CLASS: Tiefling Cleric
HOOK: As a Tiefling who grew up in a big city known for crime, Griza was never trusted by other species. Rather than turn to crime and evil herself, she fights for good and equality.
    FACTION(S): Court of Logan
    ANYTHING ELSE?:

    Ennis Harper

    (Link)

    STUDENT NAME: Ennis Harper
    MODERATOR?: N
NPC?: Y. Fills in as NPCs as necessary as he gets more accustomed to LARPing.
PLAY STYLE?: Ennis understands game mechanics well, but he's shy and goes along with whatever the bolder personalities in his faction suggest. He's content to play the sidekick, the background character, or even the corpse and let other people have the spotlight. As his OC, though, he's inclined to always choose the "Nice" options.

He puts a lot of work into his costumes and transforming into his character. As he gets more comfortable LARPing his OC, he'll frequently sew new outfits and make new accessories for "her" to wear as if she's another one of his dolls. ... A doll he wears the skin of... Yeah.

    CHARACTER NAME: Josephine Lovelace
    RACE/CLASS: Human / Necromancer
HOOK: A noblewoman who gave up her birthright to become a dedicated priestess of the death goddess, Hemonga.
    FACTION(S): Court of Logan
ANYTHING ELSE?: This is the character he played in DnD last year. I'll be updated her gdoc with more character details as things develop.

Also, he's in both LARP and OE this year and tends to alternate unless there's important plot happening that Saturday.

JENNY are made up deities allowed for this campaign? I was thinking Ennis's character is a Necromancer who's a Priestess of some death god but all the ones in 3.5 are evil-leaning and Ennis is too soft to play anything but a good-aligned character. He'd probably worship someone similar to Evening Glory.
